IN-PERSON Address: RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, Rutgers Academic Building (East Wing), Room 2400
15 Seminary Place, New Brunswick, NJ 08901  –  Networking begins at 8:30am

This training program will offer some insight into how colleges and universities are addressing the problem of sexually abusive behaviors in institutions of higher education.  Aside from academics, college settings allow young adults the opportunity to establish a social network, explore their developing identities and experiment with romantic interactions.  Sexuality is usually a part of this exploration.

In this presentation, we will focus on three key aspects that affect how this behavior is addressed, specifically the instances when the sexual behavior results in one of the participants experiencing it as painful, shameful or abusive.  Research shows that approximately 20% of female and 6% of male college students report having been sexually assaulted while in college.  The public recognition of this problem (and the poor way these cases have been traditionally handled) resulted in a Federal mandate to colleges to address the problem (Title IX).  It is also clear that the types of problem behaviors range in severity and appropriate responses should be tailored on a case by case basis.  The process of developing dating skills is difficult and fraught with misunderstandings even under the best of circumstances.  Such questions as how to establish and maintain sexual limits in a relationship, clarifying motivations for sexual behavior (“hooking up” or “catching feelings”), and understanding one’s own developmental trajectory will be discussed.  And, lastly the Federal Government’s model (STARRSA) provides a framework to provide individualized interventions appropriate for the needs of individuals who have violated sexual boundaries.

Following the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. List the primary reason the federal government developed the Title IX regulations.
  2. Describe the changes affecting the implementation of Title IX regulations.
  3. Describe the constellation of events that contribute to problematic sexual behaviors on college campuses.
  4. List the two major implementations of STARRSA in college settings.
