There has been a substantial increase in the number of individuals coming to the attention of the criminal justice system for accessing child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). As these offenders enter the criminal justice system, understanding these individuals and creating an effective supervision plan is required. This workshop will examine risk factors unique to these offenders, assessment basics and treatment approaches for offenders who use child sexual exploitation materialsin contrast to contact offenders and/or mixed offenders. We will also explore the particular needs of these offenders in regard to healthy Internet use, sexual preoccupation, sexual functioning, sexual competence, neurodiversity as well as relationship building abilities. We look forward to exploring this digital population in more detail and discuss their particular needs within the criminal justice system.
Goals for participants
1) Be able to identify the unique characteristics of offenders who use CSEM.
2) Be able to identify distinctions between “fantasy driven” and “contact driven” offenders who use CSEM.
3) Be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current assessment approaches with offenders who use CSEM.
4) Develop an understanding of the extant research regarding current treatment approaches for these offenders.
5) Discuss the clinical and ethical rational of providing treatment for offenders who use child sexual exploitation materialgiven their unique characteristics
6) Be able to identify relevant treatment targets for offenders who use CSEM
7) Be able to critically review case examples and develop a concrete treatment strategy.
Dr. Lyne Piché

Dr. Lyne Piché, is a Registered Psychologist practicing in Surrey, British Columbia. She has worked 25 years in the field of Forensic Psychology, including work in both federal and provincial correctional settings. Dr. Piché completed her graduate studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her expertise includes working with people struggling with paraphilias, sexual offenders, violent offenders as well as individuals struggling with sexual dysfunctions. She offers psychological services to government agencies as well as within her own private practice. She welcomes couples and individuals who wish to work at improving their relationships, improving their sexual health, increasing sexual satisfaction and increasing their level of intimacy with others. She also offers interventions to address trauma including EMDR and Lifespan Integrationmodels of intervention. Anton received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Simon Fraser University in 1998. His primary areas of interest have included forensic psychology and addictions. In addition to completing a master’s degree practicum through the Forensic Services Commission of British Columbia he also completed a doctoral level clinical internship at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta with a specialization in addictions. He accepted a position with the Correctional Service of Canada (Pacific Region) in 1997 and provided assessment and treatment for men convicted of violent and sexual offences. In 2004 he became the Senior Psychologist for sex offence specific programming and before leaving the Correctional Service of Canada in 2009 also acted as the Chief of Psychology. He has worked as a psychologist at the Drug Treatment Court of Vancouver and the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addictions. Anton has maintained a private practice that has included forensic risk assessment and treatment since 2000. He provided sex offence specific treatment services for the Forensic Services Commission of British Columbia from 2009 to 2019 and has given presentations on sex offence issues and risk assessment and the assessment and treatment of child sexual exploitation material offences (CSEM) at national and international conferences. He is the coauthor of a treatment workbook for men who use CSEM. He is a national trainer for the Static-99R which is the most widely used actuarial measure for predicting risk of sexual recidivism. He provides expert testimony to the courts with regard to sex offence issues and is on the list of those designated to provide Dangerous Offender assessments as an amicus curiae. Finally, he is a Fellow of the Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse (ATSA) and served as the co-chair person at the 2011 ATSA conference.
