After a brief historical survey of risk assessment, SPJ will be thoroughly reviewed as an evidence-based, discretionary approach that produces meaningful risk assessments with individualized scenario planning to manage risk and enhance treatment. The SVR-20, originally published in 1997, has just been revised with Version 2 and will be reviewed. Case examples for properly using the SVR-20 V2 will be presented as will ways to avoid potential misuse with a focus on commonly encountered cognitive heuristics. Finally, a SPJ rubric for conducting risk assessments will be presented that facilitates useful scenario planning when making judgments under conditions of uncertainty.
