The Paraphilic Interests and Disorders Scale (PIDS)

 Georgia Winters, Ph.D.

Friday, January 27, 2023

8:45am -12pm

Georgia Winters, Ph.D. will be present a research study that was partially funded through a $5,000 NJATSA research grant.

Paraphilic disorders are a diagnostic category within the widely used Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). These disorders are related to non-normative sexual interests that are intense and persistent (i.e., paraphilic interest), and which result in significant distress or impairment in major areas of functioning, or which are acted upon with a nonconsenting person (i.e., paraphilic disorder). The paraphilic disorders remain understudied and consequently the DSM-5-TR provides little information about the prevalence of paraphilic disorders in the general population. The present training will provide an overview about the DSM-5-TR paraphilic disorders. The development and validation of a new self-report measure for the DSM-5-TR paraphilic disorders will be discussed. Subsequently, data will be presented regarding the prevalence of paraphilic interests, behaviors, and disorders in a large general population sample. The training will conclude with a discussion of the implications for the assessment and treatment of paraphilic disorders.

Training Goals and Objectives

  1. List the diagnostic criteria for the DSM-5-TR paraphilic disorders.
  2. Understand the development and validation of the Paraphilic Interests and Disorders Scale (PIDS).
  3. Describe the prevalence of paraphilic interests, behaviors, and disorders in the general populations.
  4. Discuss how base rates of paraphilic disorders can influence the assessment and treatment of individuals who sexually offend.
