Men Who Sexually Offend Over the Age of 60: Risk Profiles and Recidivism

Jeffrey Sandler, Ph.D.

Friday, November 17, 2023

8:45am -12pm

2.5 Psychology APA CEs Available

This workshop examines the issue of sexual recidivism and age, focusing on the sexual recidivism risk posed by older men who have sexually offended. The workshop begins by discussing the growing number of older individuals in need of sexual recidivism risk assessments, as well as the relationship between aging and sexual recidivism risk broadly. The criminal histories, risk profiles, and predictors of sexual recidivism of a group of men who sexually offended over the age of 60 are then discussed. The sexual recidivism rates of these men are then empirically compared to a group of men who committed sexual offenses under the age of 60 but were released to the community over the age of 60, to see if age at sexual index offense impacts sexual recidivism rates (and therefore risk). Clinical implications for risk assessment and treatment of men who sexually offended over the age of 60 are then discussed.

Training Goals and Objectives

  1. Attendees will be able to describe and discuss why there is a growing number of older men in need of sexual recidivism risk assessments.
  2. Attendees will be able to compare the risk profiles of men who have sexually offended over the age of 60.
  3. Attendees will be able to explain risk and protective factors that predict sexual recidivism in populations of men who have sexually offended over the age of 60.
  4. Attendees will be able to discuss how the sexual recidivism of men who sexually offended under the age of 60 but were released over the age of 60 compares to that of men who sexually offended over the age of 60 and were then released (i.e., whether the rates of sexual recidivism vary between these groups and, if so, how).
