Becoming Trauma-Informed in our Work with People who have Sexually Offended

Presented by Gwenda Willis, Ph.D., PGDipClinPsych

Thursday, June 6, 2024 @ 1:15pm -4:00pm via Zoom

2.5 APA CEs Available

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common in the histories of adults who have sexually offended, and many risk-relevant characteristics they present with (dynamic risk factors/criminogenic needs) have their origins in early trauma. This presentation will provide a brief overview of relevant ACE research and introduce key principles of Trauma Informed Care (TIC). TIC views problematic behaviour through the lens of early trauma and relies heavily on the therapeutic or supervisory relationship as a corrective emotional experience. Key strategies for becoming trauma-informed will be discussed and demonstrated utilizing case examples. TIC aligns well with strengths-based approaches to therapy and supervision that aim to support clients live better and safer lives than what they have previously known.

Training Goals and Objectives

  1. Discuss how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a relevant responsivity consideration when working with individuals who have sexually offended
  2. Analyze at least two dynamic risk factors/criminogenic needs through a trauma-informed lens
  3. Describe at least two examples of applying Trauma Informed Care principles with persons who have sexually offended
