There is growing awareness and empirical support for utilizing a Strengths-Based Approach (SBA) when providing mental health services to children, adolescents, families, and adults. SBA is an effective approach when working with youth who are struggling with a variety of presenting problems, including harmful sexual behaviors. A strengths-based orientation helps create an atmosphere in which youth (and their families) begin to feel psychologically safe, open, and engaged in services.
This presentation will provide participants with information about key strengths-based interventions (Powell, 2015; 2026), which target eleven areas of healthy development: 1) Relationship development, 2) Safe environment development, 3) Social connections development, 4) Hope and self-efficacy development; 5) Self-worth development; 6) Approach goal development, 7) Resilience development, 8) Self-regulation development, 9) Prosocial development, 10) Intellectual development, and 11) Provider development.
The training objectives are to….
1) Describe ‘what is’ a Strengths-Based Approach
2) Implement interventions that promote Hope & Self-Efficacy
3) Explain the difference between an Approach Goal vs. an avoidant goal.
4) Describe Protective Factors commonly associated with Resilience in youth and adults
